Con Private banking si intende una serie di servizi e consulenze, soprattutto di tipo finanziario, offerto ad un segmento di clienti dotati di un patrimonio potenzialmente molto alto.
A questi clienti viene offerto un servizio "personalizzato", appunto "private" (privato), e di elevata qualità.
In Italia il "Private banking" ha avuto un'introduzione relativamente recente ed è soprattutto ad appannaggio dei gruppi bancari più importanti, come Intesa SanPaolo, Unicredit o Ubi Banca.
Nella realtà economica italiana, costuita da tanti piccoli e medio imprenditori, tale gestione risulta peraltro molto vantaggiosa ed efficiente.
La gestione del segmento "private" è più complessa, più elevata è la cultura finanziaria del cliente, articolata è la gestione del credito, eterogenea la composizione del portafoglio investimenti.
Il "Private banking" si contrappone in modo netto e sostanziale al "Retail banking" caratterizzato da una gestione della clientela basata su sistemi e processi automatizzati e standardizzati.La clientela retail, o "al dettaglio", è quella piu' numerosa; per intenderci è il segmento di cui facciamo parte un pò tutti, piccoli risparmiatori e correntisti degli istituti di credito.
I clienti retail vengono gestiti attraverso sistemi automatizzati, griglie statistiche, con una personalizzazione dei servizi e delle consulenze piuttosto basse. Il merito creditizio, ad esempio per accendere un mutuo o concedere un prestito personale, viene valutato attraverso sistemi statistici quali il "credit scoring" ed è subordinato alla presenza di adeguate garanzie.
